Pygmy Goats can be obtained from various sources. The most important factor that matters and will play a decisive role in the future is the responsibility of the Pygmy Goat breeder. Good health is essential when buying Pygmy Goats. If one goat is infected with any of the diseases possible in Pygmy Goats, it can have a devastating effect on the entire herd. The danger lies in the fact that some of the most serious diseases can be carried silently for months until some factor causes the infected Pygmy Goat to display the symptoms of it.

Besides perfect health, Pygmy Goats should serve their purpose. There can be various circumstances influencing the productivity level. For instance, nutrition, management, health condition, and change in climate can play a positive or negative role in the productivity of Pygmy Goats.

Unproven Pygmy Goats are risky purchase. Responsible breeders should educate potential buyers on the characteristics, needs and upkeep of Pygmy Goats. Moreover, it is fair to draw the buyer's attention to faults of your Pygmy Goats, if any. Remember that good reputation is hard to get unless you are honest and responsible.

Pygmy Goats - Breeding

Breeding takes place in August-March. The litter size is from one to four young every 9 to 12 months. Male goats become sexually mature at 4 months, while females only at 6 months. When kids are born, they weigh about 4 pounds. Colostrum given to kids soon after birth will provide antibodies, which will give the kids resistance to many diseases. Pygmy Goat kids should get plenty of sunshine and exercise. The doe must have a dry period (a period of 6 weeks to 2 months when you do not milk it), which will allow its mammary system to rest and regenerate. Healthy purebred Pygmy Goats is what breeders should strive for.
